Many people would say that luck has always been on the side of Andy Amatrudo. It’s helped him excel as a poker player since he was a young boy. It’s also helped him live a long and healthy life, 103 years to be exact.

Andy has played seven-card stud since he was a third grader growing up in South Philadelphia.

“Ever since I was eight or nine years old I used to play on the steps, for cards, marbles and cigarettes,” said Andy.

When he wasn’t playing poker, Andy spent time caring for his six younger brothers and sisters.

“He was a hair dresser and with his tips he used to buy us our Christmas presents,” said his brother Raymond. “And we never forgot that.”

On Tuesday, Andy celebrated his 103rd birthday on the poker floor of the Trump Taj Mahal where he’s a familiar face.

“The Taj Mahal to me is my second home,” said Andy. “I’ve lived next door and I’m here every day, seven days a week.”

“I was scared because he’s been playing for a long time and he’s a very good player too,” said Mark Fast. “When he raises he’s got the goods.”

“If he’s missing they’ll call him up and they’ll call us and say ‘hey, where’s Andy?’” said Tom Gitto, director of the Taj Mahal Poker Operations. “Everybody starts looking for that red flag on his scooter to come scooting in the room.”

Andy became emotional while speaking during his birthday celebration at the casino.

“I want to thank my relatives,” said Andy, on the verge of tears. “I’m very proud of them all.”

Amazingly, the 103-year-old does not take any medication.

“I say my prayers every day to God to keep me healthy,” said Andy. “That’s my secret.”

But aside from prayer, Andy gives credit to one more thing.

“I get charged up when I play cards, it keeps me going,” said Andy. “I love to play poker!”
If you want to see complete lists of all poker words, poker slang and poker terms, check the websites listed under References. Also, this list does not include any commonly used acronyms, abbreviations or initialisms that I already covered in my series of articles titled: Poker Acronyms, Abbreviations and Initialisms.

Or, this phrase is used when discussing seat positions during a round of “Hold’em” poker games. The middle positions are those players seated after the early position players and before the late position players.

LOUISVILLE, Ky., Feb. 21, 2012 /PRNewswire/ – If you’ve always wanted to be a poker pro, where someone else pays your entry fees to play in casino poker tournaments, your day has come!

(Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20120221/CL55946LOGO )

HogWildPokerLeagues.com, the original online poker league community, is launching today a new program that rewards multiple players each month for their outstanding play by staking them to $500 toward live action tournament play at a casino of their choice.

But that’s only the beginning– HogWildPokerLeagues.com will also grant one player the dream of a lifetime—a $13,000 package to play in the World Series of Poker!

And here’s what’s even better…there is no fee to participate and no monthly subscription.

All that’s required is for a player to register on the HogWildPokerLeagues.com website and sign up free to play games in the HogWild Staking Series each month. Players must play eight or more games to be eligible – and Sunday and Wednesday night qualifiers are also $200 freerolls. Participants can check the Staking Series leaderboard to watch as they play their way to the top. Only a player’s best eight games are counted. Players who finish among the leading fifteen each month will receive the $500 buy-in to their chosen casino, plus HogWild™ Poker apparel that declares to one and all that they’re a staked poker pro.

The player with the twelve best game performances through May 31 will be awarded with the $13,000 WSOP Main Event package.

“Players in our leagues love the fact that their game improves rapidly when they compete in our league format,” says HogWild CEO Jeff Amrein. “Along the way almost every player has a dream to be staked as a pro and we wanted to give many players that experience, rewarding them for their demonstrated skill over multiple games. Nearly 50 players will live that chance in the next three months thanks to this series.”

Players who are awarded the $500 staking prize will pick their event, have HogWild Poker verify it and then the funds will be transferred. In exchange, each player who participates must commit to providing 10% of any winnings to Poker Gives, HogWild Poker’s charity of choice. Poker Gives raises funds through poker events and private donations for mainstream charities on behalf of the poker world.

HogWild Poker was the first company to socialize poker online. Conceived initially as a way to allow players to gather their friends for virtual home games, the site expanded to become the premiere provider of player-created leagues. Anyone can now start a private or open league at no cost, and set the rules. These include choosing custom blinds, determining the length and the frequency of the games, and deciding whether to keep it private or open it to all comers.

HogWild Poker does the rest– alerting all the players via email and sending them a text just before the game starts. There are a team of moderators who guide new players and keep the atmosphere respectful. All the points and statistics are accrued, and the rankings are displayed on each league’s very own leaderboard.

There are more than 1,000 leagues already established on HogWildPokerLeagues.com. And there are several reasons for the site’s rapidly growing popularity, not the least of which is that there’s no subscription package to buy, and no display ads or banners.

Built to emphasize the player-engagement aspects of poker, HogWildPokerLeagues.com offers the most sophisticated communications tools in the game—voicechat, emails and posting to Facebook-style league walls and chat rooms. Furthermore, players can engage in Prop Bets, a feature unique to HogWild Poker. Players can purchase HogWild “Hog Bucks” currency that allows them place bounties on each other or challenge their opponents to Prop Bets such as “Best Hand of The Night,” “Last Player Standing,” or “Leader at End of Round.”

In addition to unique social-interaction features, HogWild Poker has innovated a game function that actually makes the play much more like a live game – hole cards that are dealt “down. ” When a players looks at his or her hand, their hole cards “light up” — allowing for plenty of speculation as to whether that is a signal of strength or weakness.

Top players from each league automatically advance to the “Top Hog” site-wide competition where they compete against other leagues for $500. HogWild Poker also holds regular freerolls and promotions that give players a chance to win live buy-ins.

For newcomers to poker, a locally friendly game amongst pals is a perfect solution provided by HogWild Poker. But for players with a commitment to serious play, prevailing over the long haul against the competition in a series of events—not just one where a lucky draw can make a winner–proves your enduring skill and strength. Being on the top of the HogWild Poker leaderboard establishes one’s mastery of the game.

“It’s really an amazing site. If you like online poker in leagues, HogWild is a great place to play,” says legendary pro and World Series winner Phil Hellmuth.

A dog track has set a record for the biggest poker tournament in the state — but only after police were called in to restore order.

The Palm Beach Kennel Club attracted 2,607 entrants to a tournament over the weekend, smashing the previous mark of 1,600 set in August at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel Casino in Hollywood.

Players lined up as early as 4 a.m. Saturday to play at 11 a.m. for $1 million in prizes. But some argued over places in line, and others reportedly tried to scalp $555 entry tickets for as much as $2,000.

Police were called to regain control.

“It was the closest thing to a riot in poker as has ever happened,” said Nolan Dalla, publicist for the World Series of Poker Circuit Series, which included last weekend’s tournament, the first of 12 at the kennel club.

Dalla said the scene was reminiscent of the final opening session of the 2009 WSOP Main Event in Las Vegas, when an estimated 500 late registrants were denied entry because it had filled up.

“Way beyond what we were expecting, and we were expecting a lot,” said Theresa Hume, director of publicity at the kennel club, west of West Palm Beach.

The tournament drew so much interest because the kennel club guaranteed $1 million in prize money with an entry fee of $555. Entry fee for the World Series of Poker main event, the one shown on ESPN, is $10,000.

“The attractiveness of a $1 million prize pool for such a small amount of money is nearly impossible to pass up for any serious poker player,” said Chris Cosenza, co-publisher of Ante Up magazine. “That’s a nearly unimaginable return on investment.”

Evan Snow, 25, of Coral Springs called it “pandemonium,” saying that players on Saturday should have planned better.

“We’ve gotten pretty spoiled in Florida about just showing up and playing,” said Snow, who bought his ticket in advance online. “But for 2,600 people to come to a dog track, that shows how much they wanted to play.”

While most Broward and Miami-Dade county horse tracks, dog tracks and jai-alai frontons have slots — and the Hard Rock and two other Seminole casinos also have blackjack — the kennel club offers only dog racing, simulcasts and poker.

Kennel club officials hope that a referendum on the Palm Beach County ballot in November will clear the way for slot machines, but legislative approval or a court challenge also could be necessary.

Meanwhile, the economic benefit of the poker tournament to the West Palm Beach area was evident. Hotels in the area were full of poker players, staying an average of five days — much longer than most, according to Jesse Bush, of the Holiday Inn Palm Beach Airport sales department.

“We’re definitely happy to see it, and they’re coming from all over the country,” Bush said. About half of the hotel’s 199 rooms were occupied by poker players over the weekend, he said. Last year, Hume said, the tournament series generated at least 1,100 nights of hotel business.

Dennis Grady, president of the Chamber of Commerce of the Palm Beaches, said the tournament is good overall for business.

“The hotel bed tax, poker pari-mutuel taxes and sales tax revenue that comes into the county and state helps the county and state’s economies,” he said.

The tournaments continue through Feb. 27. Get results at WorldSeriesOfPoker.com.

But opponents say–the move just encourages gambling addiction–and that destroys families. “It’s one thing to do it when it’s illegal and know that it’s harmful.” says Danny Carroll with The Family Leader, “But now the government’s given the stamp of approval saying you can do it and we think it’s ok. It’s gonna expand. Why would you do that knowing full-well that children are gonna suffer.”

Still, the three-member panel approved the measure… which would allow casinos to oversee on-line poker sites. A study released last year shows the on-line sites could generate 60-million dollars in profit and 13-million dollars in tax revenue. Backers say… the sites will actually combat gambling addiction by keeping track of players’ habits

“I could walk into one casino, spend $500, walk into another casino tomorrow spend $500. Walk into another one..” says Kirk Uhler of US Digital Gaming, “So in the on-line regulated environment we have the ability to monitor somebody’s play, identify somebody who has a problem and exclude them from future participation and direct them straight into the arms of those who are established to help them.”

The bill now heads to the full committee for review.
