Poker TV shows are falling by the wayside.
Televised poker shows in the U.S. are apparently losing commercial support after the sweeping crackdown in April on the three largest poker sites operating in the country. It’s not a surprising trend because the operators of those sites – PokerStars, Full Tilt Poker and Absolute Poker/Ultimate Bet – were key sponsors.
After the crackdown, “the companies who were interested in sponsoring many of the poker shows on TV have packed up and left,” Mori Eskandani, owner of Poker Productions, a television production company that has produced shows for the poker websites, told the WSJ. “So we are looking for new sponsors.”
Major events such as the World Series of Poker, which garner mainstream support from the likes of GoDaddy.com, are still televised, but lesser-known tournaments such as the North American Poker Tour have been canceled, according to the WSJ.
Locally, the Heartland Poker Tour is scheduled to return for another round in September. The tournament is televised on Altitude Sports in Colorado.
